How about if when you purchase a music track from somewhere, they encrypt it so that it can only be played if you have the encryption key -- which would be something like your credit card number or maybe some kind of "copyright user ID". That way pirated tracks could always be traced back to their source (or else they couldn't be played) -- yet friends could still share them and an individual could play the same tracks on several machines, unlike the schemes which tie the track to a specific machine.
